DECARBONIZZAZIONE DELLA NAVIGAZIONE
“Il ruolo della sostenibilità energetica nei porti”
MEDFEST 2024
Organized by Rinnovabili (Renewables)
The port system is fundamental for the economic and social development of a country, as it is capable of generating wealth and employment at local and national levels. Italy, being a peninsula in the center of the Mediterranean, possesses a particularly developed port system, with as many as 282 ports. However, it is essential that this development is accompanied by environmental protection policies, as ports are responsible for a significant share of greenhouse gas emissions.
The United Nations, through the International Maritime Organization, aims to reduce emissions by 20-30% by 2030 and to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050. Italy, with its National Recovery and Resilience Plan (PNRR), has allocated 270 million euros for energy interventions in ports, but the challenge is still significant: the global shipping sector depends almost entirely on fossil fuels.
The objective of this Live Streaming was to shine a spotlight on how technological innovation and the will to change are key to overcoming this challenge and making ports sustainable.
